This is an essay on methods of resistance within environments wherein one has little or no control. This could be in a prison, mental hospital, detention camp, or any other place where one is held prisoner and thereby unable to make free choices. The lack of intelligence demonstrated by many prison inmates is one of the factors that keeps them from exercising all of the options that they would have if they had a more suitable political education. I suppose this is why they keep political prisoners seperate from the general population, but sometimes they don't; thus these techniques can work and can also help in terms of isolated action. I used some of these techniques myself, when I was gulaged in some psychiatric concentration camps back in the late 1980's, thus I can testify to their effectiveness. Some of the techniques described however would only be applicable in the event of some kind of imprisonment where one had nothing to lose, because of no hope of getting out other than escape. Here are some of the concepts: A. Passive-Aggressive.This is a method of covert resistance wherein there is no overt indication of resistance. This captures the volition of those who would oppress you, by making them unsure whether you are really resisting them, or whether your behavior is just crazy or strange. The basic technique is to demonstrate outward obedience, while finding ways to sabatoge and disrupt the normal working order of things, through lies, manipulation, deception, and when that fails, irrational behavior. As far as crazy behavior goes, it should be violent only when one has a good chance of making a successful attack, and disruptive only when reprisals would be too severe. I will use techniques using a concentration camp as a model, which is the worst example, that will highlight the effectiveness of these ideas: In a concentration camp, these would be good ways to resist:
These kinds of techniques done on an ongoing basis will bring even a repressive environment down. The key to making it work however, is to classify inmates that fail to work to disrupt the institution and thus cooperate with the authorities, (even going so far as to go along with work programs,) to peg them as snitches and collaborators and promptly kill them. When the inmates fear the prison resistance more than the guards, loyalty to the work of constant sabatoge and attacks upon those in authority will be ongoing. In the final stage, the prison officials may just decide to kill everyone in the camp, but being dead is better than living like a dog anyway, so there is nothing to lose. They will only have left just themselves, and a concentration camp that has no reason to exist. B. Psychiatric Gulags. This is where passive-aggression has an even greater freeplay, due to the fact that resistance will never be surely ascertained on the part of the staff, due to the fact that you can resist in ways where they will just think that you are not comprehending them, or are just crazy. Not complying because they think that you are out of contact with reality, just confuses them, or acting on instructions in a manipulative way to circumvent their orders, but making it appear due to "mental illness," or disordered behavior. The techniques described above regarding prisons and concentration camps would also work well in forensic psychiatric units, and many other psychiatric institutions as well, because they are concentration camps; "de facto". Aside from this, if there is still a legal system left in a totalitarian world, here are some things that you can do after you get out of the psych. hospital:
If the "Anti-Psychiatry Movement," was more like ALF or "Earth First," and had a few Eric Rudolph's of its own it would help. |
